Every citizen believes that they are entitled to the rights they are granted by the government. However, not all citizens are afforded equal rights. Citizens of the LGBTQ community are consistently denied rights that are given to the average American. Specifically, gay and lesbian couples are denied the right to same-sex marriage in several states across the United States of America. These people are discriminated against because of their sexual orientation in their daily lives and often cannot participate in many aspects of the typical American life. In all the countries around the world there are laws which are abided by the citizens as well as different cultures that are often misunderstood by outsiders to that culture. There are many different meanings to the word marriage across cultures, although we need to accept that homosexuality is part of human nature and should not be discriminated against. This discrimination is extremely unacceptable in today’s society because gay and lesbian couples are citizens just like all the others, who should be grated the same rights as heterosexual citizens. Media has been a large part of making the LGBTQ movement popular with TV shows such as Glee and Modern Family that focus on the lives of many gay and lesbian couples. Also many actors that star in extremely popular television series have come out with their sexual orientation like Ellen DeGeneres and Neil Patrick Harris; star of How I Met Your Mother. So why do laws remain to set them apart from the average American? In the media we hear about couples marrying for money.
