Persuasive Essay On Gene Splicing And Cloning

1918 Words8 Pages

Have you ever had the thought of what if there was two of me, well that might become a reality with gene splicing and cloning. Cloning in animals has taken off and is enhancing at a phenomenal rate. At this rate illness in humanity could be eradicated and we could prolong human life for generations to come. This doesn’t just bold well for humans but for plant life also. Plants with altered gene can produce seeds immune to deadly pathogens that could kill harvest’s. This could create a great harvest which wildlife would not eat nor ravage and ruin. The opportunities of this process are astronomical to humanity.
The history of gene splicing goes back to 1973 when herb boyer and Stanley Cohen created the first recombinant taking genes from a clawed …show more content…

Next, they separate the desired single gene making multiple copies. Next they begin design the gene to be compatible with a different organism by cutting the gene and enzymes and replacing the regions of the gene that are separated. Because plants have millions of cells the process of doing this to every cell would be impossible. So instead they use a gene gun to get these genes into the nucleus of a cell and have the cell reproduce with them genes. And when the plants with these genes mature they drop seeds with these traits and gene in them to make them stronger or more resistant. A huge development in cloning is battling disease like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s by engineering stem cells personalized to them seen in this article (http://www.cbsnews.com/news/cloning-advancement-scientists-create-embryonic-stem-cells-from-adult-skin/). gene silencing is a technique which certain genes are deactivated by geneticists to prevent harmful effects of the specific gene they are able to accomplish this by binding a precise strand of RNA to an already established mRNA (messenger RNA) strand. by binding the RNA to the mRNA prevents from replicated of that DNA therefor viruses like aids and hepatitis can be targeted using. genetic engineering was possible by the discovery of what a gene is in 1953 by an english chemist francis crick and American biologist james watson. in 1990 Genetically Modified Organisms better known as GMO was produced and marketed to increase nutrients, resistance to drought and faster growth. after 20 years later GMO has not lived up to its projections. a report in 2009 by a group union of concerned scientist named Failure to Yield: Evaluating the Performance of Genetically Engineered Crops. this article showed that GMO’s did not increase yields of crops at all since its development. from this the general people are becoming weary of GMO’s is scientist verification of safety of public consumption and the growing use of GMO’s. and pesticides engineered for GMO’s. the biggest thing GMO’s have successfully done is its resistance to pesticides.immunity to herbicide where its only affects the weeds and not the crops itself. because the resistance to glyphosate which is know as “broad spectrum herbicide meaning that it's intended to kill weeds. now the united states uses 180 to 185 million pounds of of glyphosate yearly. this makes up almost have of pesticides used in the u.s. this is unsettling for the millions of acres of food being does with poison.glyphosate functions very different from other pesticides.killing the plant it’s directed on.this evidence was (foundhttp://calmfulliving.com/project/gmos-and-pesticides-what-concerns-scientists/). now with genetically engineered seeds to be naturally immune to both seeds and
