Imagine this… not too long from now, you are on the vacation of your dreams to a beautiful exotic island. You cannot wait to jump in the ocean and scuba dive, but it is a harsh awakening when you are expecting wonderful fish, but all you see is plastic. Well, sadly, that is the track we are on. Scientists say by 2050, there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish. On top of that, landfills are filling up, the planets temperatures are swinging rapidly, and our icecaps are melting. There are so many things that we as human beings can do to stop this drastic plastic increase and reduce our carbon footsteps, yet we choose not to. A group of simply 16 people whom all live in different parts of California embarked on a huge level of change. This group, named Green Cities California, have made major difference with seven main impacts: Community Choice Energy, No More Bottled Water, Free Assessment to Promote Bans on SIngle Use Bags Statewide, Collective Voice on State Legislation, Tackling Consumptions, Climate Friendly Foods, and Recycled Paper. This group has accomplished saving 1,633,302 plastic water bottles, created many legislative proposals, saving 8,600,000 pounds of C02 commissions, 19,600,000 gallons of water, 11,500,000 kilowatt hours of electricity, 67,000 trees, etc. ALong with that, they hold two in- person workshops annually. In relation to Hawaii’s plastic bag ban, according to (Carla Herreria), “‘This was not done by the state legislature, but instead by all four County Councils,” the Surfrider Foundation, an environmental advocacy group, said in 2012 when the ban was first passed.
