Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility Guantanamo Bay is a detention camp that is supposed to hold only the most dangerous people. In 2002 after the 9/11 terrorist attack, George Bush opened the facility to interrogate suspected terrorists to ensure the countries safety. Unfortunately, at this point in society the United States arrests people and takes them here without any court hearing or trial and supposedly even tortures them (Nolen 1). Guantanamo Bay, (also known as GITMO) can be seen as a violation of many human rights. Since 2009, Barack Obama has tried his best to close the camp. Guantanamo Bay detention camp should be shut down for violating amendments 1, 4, 8, and 9. To begin, Guantanamo Bay violates the right of no torturing or degrading treatment. Article five of the Universal declaration of human rights states that “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.” But, in 2007 an FBI report was released on what exactly goes on at GITMO. The files contained information on the types of torture and how the detainees are treated. One of the more common treatments that occurs at Guantanamo is water dousing. Detainees are doused or drenched in cold or freezing water. One detainee has even said his naked body was doused then wrapped in plastic and kept in this cold water for several minutes (Laughland 1). In 2002, Gul Rahman died of hypothermia who had been left in a cold cell, stripped from the waist down, and had been doused in water.
