With the increase in mass shootings in the United States today, the call for a more intense gun control law is essential. The first step to achieve this would be providing a more intensive background check and screening for mental illnesses for people who wish to purchase firearms. This will ensure that the people who buy firearms are not mentally ill. Also, people who are seen a violent to others and mentally ill should not hold possession over guns; therefore, if both apply the firearms owned by the individual should be confiscated. However, the individual shall be placed in a restoration period to earn their firearms back. This will promote the individual to acquire help for their mental illness. Current regulation limits individuals with mental illnesses from purchasing firearms, but the problem goes farther than that. Most people with mental illnesses or who exhibit violent behavior towards other individuals already possess firearms. The current policy also does not require states to provide the federal government with information about the mentally ill individual within their state. Which makes it easier for those individuals to purchase firearms. Risk factors need to be removed, that cause people to act violently towards other individuals. Another factor that needs to be included when dealing with increased firearm laws is freedom. The question as to what the United States should consider a freedom that people have is important. When an individual is not behaving rationally or morally, the question come up whether they deserve certain freedoms. This would be included within gun control because if an individual acts in a violent way towards others and is mentally ill their right to bear arms could be taken away.
