Gun control has been a debatable issue since the 1870s, not too long after the Second Amendment of the Constitution was added (NPR). This controversial topic has been a factor in determining the fate of guns in the United States of America. Gun control has been a large influence in the decisions voters have made in politics. Gun control is one of the main driving questions for the candidates in the running, which usually persuades voters to vote either way. As of today, the citizens of the U.S. stereotype that Republicans want the ability to own guns without the interruption from the government, whereas the Democrats, want to be able to exterminate or at least limit the power to own guns. Gun control has been a deciding factor in which way an election could go, whether the final decision is to pick the Republican party or the Democratic party. Some Citizens of the United States view politics as a confusing, complicated, or a neutral opinion, whereas, some are highly interested in the world of politics and want to influence their government by voting. According to Professor Huemer at the University of Colorado, the theory Mr. Huemer developed is called “The Divergent-Values Theory.” This theory developed explains the insight in the decisions the citizens of the United States make. The Divergent-Values Theory reflects the simple idea that people have diverse values so the people lean towards their important value, which then creates a bias when discussing politics (Huemer). There has been many responses from these outburst being, organizations and associations. Organizations such as, the NRA, Everytown for Gun Safety, and the Gun Owners of America. These organizations are advocates for gun safety and/or preserving the second amendment rights. Other advocates towards the gun issues are political candidates. The political perspective heavily influences the citizens about gun control, especially the current president, Donald Trump.
