Danger surrounds us everyday and everywhere, from getting hit by a vehicle, to wild animals, or potential attackers. Another potential danger is getting shot by a gun. Currently, it is possible to have a gun in all fifty states, meaning that the person sitting next to you could potentially have a gun on them. In fact, in a study done conducted last year, the results showed that the past year had had the largest increase in the number of permits for handheld guns. One example of this would be if there were an argument over something that would cause a person carrying around a gun to become agitated and use it. An event like this happened on January 13, 2014 when a police officer shot and killed a man after an argument over the other person texting in a movie theater.(1) This shows how some people can misuse tools that are supposed to protect them by instead causing the violence they are trying to prevent. Another fact that shows people invoke the problem they are trying to defend against by carrying a gun is that a study published in The American Journal for Public Health found that someone carrying a gun for self defense was 4.5 times more likely to be shot than an assault victim without a gun. Also, since there is the possibility that anyone around you could be carrying a gun and could set off in an argument that you are having, people without guns tend to feel less safe. In a poll taken in 2010, 55% of voters across the United States said that they felt less safe after learning that concealed guns could be lawfully carried in the public.(1) Thus, the very point of carrying handheld guns, safety, is actually in some cases being denied because of the gun.
