United States of Huck There are two sides of everyone, whether anyone recognizes it or not. The side we displayed to our friends and family or to strangers we don’t know, our personality varies. Mark Twain used two American characters to portray distinctive outcomes of what America could be like. George Saunders refers that the United States could become the nation of good Huckleberry Finn or the nation of bad Tom Sawyer. Even though Tom Sawyer can be chosen as what the Nation can be viewed as, Huck Finn should be the example of what the Nation should follow because Huck is smart, caring, joyful, and learns from his mistakes.

There would always be a person that wants to cause trouble and have a laugh at it. As George Sanders stated that Tom “looks at misery and says: Hey, I didn’t do it… All my life I have busted my butt to get where I am, so don’t come crying to me”.Tom portrayed a character who was careless what happens to others do unless it happened to him. Tom created a “band of robbers and called it Tom Sawyer’s Gang” (Twain 5). Mark characterized Tom as what the nation should not do. Make a situation worse and not taking ownership. “Throwing the rock and hiding the hand”. America took ownership when they owned slaves, which is something that Tom would not do and that is owning up to his mistakes. When Huck and Tom wanted to rescue Jim, Tom insisted on a wild plan that could possibly get someone hurt or killed. Tom yearned to not only put himself endangered, but others as well. Tom knew that the whole time Jim was free and decided to not tell him. As George Saunders stated Tom “knows, likes king's, codified, nobility, unquestioned privilege, and presumes.” Tom is the overall representation of what Twain wanted to tell us that America should not be
