If It Was You America was founded on three key principles: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These are our core rights as citizens. Where these lines are drawn is perhaps the most daunting question that America faces. The Founders did not know what was to come and not everything is set in stone, which is why amendments are made and laws are called into question every day. It is up to the citizens to make the right call in murky scenarios. Which is why I propose that when life becomes too hard the citizens of the United States have the liberty to pursue their own definitions of happiness. For this to be accomplished the legalization of euthanasia is critical for not only liberty but also for morality. Euthanasia aka physician assisted suicide is, “the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease”. (James Park) There is an often misconception that patients can just ask to die and it is no worse than killing one’s self but as the definition states the patient must have an incurable disease. Safeguards are in place so that no irrational action is made. If health care providers viewed euthanasia as a completely immoral thing then it would not be taught. Another controversial procedure that is taught in medical school is abortions. Murdering a fetus is legal but ending the suffering of patients is not. A doctor may have moral obligations with euthanasia which is why, in the same way abortions are handled, doctors have the choice on whether they would like to perform them.
