According to this article, kangaroos are a serious problem in Australia. Due to the spread of human development, kangaroos have overpopulated. This means that there is substantially less land to live on and grass to eat for kangaroos. This has resulted in kangaroos spreading into human inhabited territory. Kangaroos have taken refuge in golf courses, neighborhoods, cities, intersections, and even schools. They rarely attack humans, but when they feel threatened, kangaroos will chase or kick people. Additionally, many farmers have found that kangaroos ate the grass that their animals were supposed to graze on. This has led to many Australians developing an intense dislike of kangaroos. The Australian government’s solution to this problem is the systematic killing of kangaroos to keep the numbers in check. Much like the United States, hunters are only allowed to bag a certain number of kangaroos. However, unlike the United States the Australian government has hired professional hunters to deal with their kangaroo problem. These hunters are paid well …show more content…

The hunters are supposed to kill the kangaroos in the most humane way possible, but the animal rights activists view killing as too brutal a solution for this problem. This has to lots of conflict between the hunters and the activists. Some activists risk legal prosecution by disrupting hunters and scaring off animals with strategically-placed loudspeakers. Other activists have taken a more peaceful approach by trying to stop the hunts using political action. During these arguments, each side has presented statistics to support their argument. According to the activists, there is a shortage of kangaroos, and hunting would bring decimate the population.
