No, I don 't think it 's impossible for a person to learn something on their own. I taught myself how to sew at 16 years old. My grandmother was the sewer in our family, she made my mom 's clothes. Unfortunately, she died when I was two years old and her passion for sewing didn 't pass on to my mother. I was inspired to learn to sew by my family and consumer science teacher Mrs. Fran, who brought to class a blanket and scarf set that she made on her own. I just thought what she made was beautiful and creative and wanted to learn how to create a blanket for myself. I was also attracted to the idea of saving money and creating something that I would normally buy versus settling for paying a high price in store.
In the Steiner reading on Constructivist theories of learning "If the experience itself is different or new, the child will accommodate or modify his or her existing constructs to reach cognitive stability"(320). I didn 't understand how to sew after Mrs. Fran showed the class what she created. I just knew she did something to create something. Therefore, I explored ways on how to sew , that my outcome was similar to Mrs. Fran. Eventually, after many trials and errors, I was able to sew a faux-fur blanket.
However, I do believe there are a few things in life that a person cannot teach themselves, for instances love and compassion. I think that emotional development of a person is an exception when it comes to teaching oneself. A few years ago, I watched a documentary
