The current debate over whether to legalize marijuana has become a national debate; where those that oppose the legalization of marijuana believes that the illicit drug should not be legalized because of the suspected harmful effects that the drug has on a person body. Conversely, others believe that marijuana should be legalized because of the minimum affect that the drug has on the body as compared to other drugs such as alcohol. Peter Grinspoon (2018) stated: The most common use for medical marijuana in the United States is for pain control. While marijuana isn’t strong enough for severe pain (for example, post-surgical pain or a broken bone), it is quite effective for the chronic pain that plagues millions of Americans, especially as they age. Additionally, marijuana can also provide relief to those who may suffer from sclerosis, nerve pain, Parkinson disease and other health conditions. Those who consume marijuana for recreational use believes that the substance provides and altered state of pleasure for the consumer, which should not be considered any more dangerous than tobacco, or alcohol. In fact, studies provided by the surgeon general and other medical professional have shown that both tobacco and alcohol can cause more long-term damage to a person body, than the use of marijuana.
