We are all aware that marijuana is a commonly used illegal drug. Opposition to its use comes from the belief that marijuana is a gateway drug; meaning it is the forerunner to harder drug use. Yet, statistics prove this to be wrong. In many cases Marijuana can be used safely and for good purposes, such as sleep aid, and a relieve to many medical ailments. Keeping Marijuana illegal is costing our country billions of dollars; when that money could be put to better use. The main reason I believe Marijuana should be legalized is because it has specific alternative uses that should be considered in the legislative process. Some statistics show marijuana is not a gateway drug like alcohol, and inhalants etc. It can be used for many medical health reasons, for example for many elderly people Marijuana is a very helpful sleep aid & a huge medical ailment reliever. If marijuana were to become legal in this state, it would become a part of the stock market. In this case if it were taxed, the government would make money off the profit. We could save billions of dollars a year as a nation by not locking up civilians for marijuana use and distribution. Forty percent of Americans have already admitted to using marijuana, not including the fifty percent who use it discreetly. Marijuana is clinically proven to be far less dangerous than legal everyday drugs such as alcohol and tobacco. Curiously these drugs have been deemed legal in our country. As an American citizen we have the right of liberty and justice. The government only has the right to limit ones actions when endangering or harming another.
