Illegal usage of marijuana is a growing epidemic in the United States currently. The percent of Americans who are smoking marijuana has recently doubled. Marijuana is a non-lethal intoxicant, unless used improperly. Every intoxicant can be dangerous if used incorrectly, but why is marijuana illegal when Alcohol poisoning kills 2,200 people every year(Dr. Antoine Douaihy)? At that rate alcohol should be banned as well as marijuana while marijuana has caused 0 deaths from overdose. Currently there are 19 states that allow the usage of marijuana for medical purposes with the additional 8 that are legalized for recreational purposes meaning 27 states in total. If half the country can legalize marijuana why can’t the rest of the country? The government is supposed to protect the country from external conflicts as well as internal conflicts, and if marijuana is considered an internal conflict, why isn’t a milkshake considered one for people who are overweight? If it causes harm to people, then it should be their own decision to do whatever they would like to do. For instance, if someone is overweight and are allowed to buy a milkshake, the government technically isn’t protecting people from an internal conflict in the country. Obesity is an internal conflict, but 35.7% of the country is obese and the government does little to nothing to prevent it(Fryar).
