We’ve seen it on the streets. We see it in our neighborhoods. We even see it in our schools. Marijuana is one of the most commonly used substances in America today. It is a form of cannabis that can induce strange moods and hallucinations. Many users and supporters of marijuana have moved for it to be legalized for consumer use. The government has pushed against this proposition for almost as long as the movement has existed. In some states like California and Colorado, the substance has been legalized for medicinal and recreational use. Marijuana has also helped to gain revenue for these states. Marijuana dealers do not have access to the legal system in states where marijuana is illegal. Because of this, dealers often resolve conflicts between each other with violence. Anyone can be caught in the crossfire, which can result in serious injuries or death. This leads to an increase in the amount of street violence in states where marijuana is illegal. In states where cannabis is legal, there is no need for dealers when the substance is not prohibited. This reduces the amount of street violence in states where marijuana is legal and lowers the overall crime rate (Marijuana Legalization). Legalization also helps to eliminate the black market. The black market’s most popular drug is marijuana. Legalization would take marijuana out of the hands of the black market and into the hands of the government and the people. Legalization would also allow police resources to go to more efficient causes. Out of all drug-related arrests, marijuana accounts for over fifty percent of them (Marijuana Arrests). Legalization would allow the police to focus on more important issues.
