Lowering the Voting Age
Should, we the citizens of the United States, lower the voting age? The answer is simply, yes. For numerous reasons such as opening the voting demographics, to making more informed citizens, to lower the arbitrary age, and to increase the potential voter turnout.
If we opened the voting demographics, it would give voice to a generation of adolescence. The voice is missing, which means a viewpoint in our society is missing. You could say the adolescence are being taken advantage of - if they are working citizens whom pay taxes to Uncle Sam. You could argue the younger citizens lack the maturity to cast the right vote. Their brains are still developing but labeling them as immature is a discrimination. History has been shown that American society has discriminated against race and gender. Lowering the age is a question of character, and inclusive character working towards abolishing apathy in American citizens at an earlier age.
If we allowed our adolescent citizens to vote, we would in turn spark passion into the hearts and minds of our social human nature. The ones who truly cared to speak their voice on their observations, would have an opportunity to make a change. The reasoning behind the age is from the Vietnam War and the age in which soldiers were drafted. An "if you can fire a gun in a war for Uncle Sam, you might as well have a vote" type of mindset. The reasons the voting age of eighteen is arbitrary are, someone who works at fourteen pays taxes yet has no say in where their money taken from taxes goes. The fact that sixteen-year olds are allowed to drive alone – in some cases a matter of life or death – yet cannot vote is behind reason.
