In 2016 59,000 to 65,000 people died from drug overdoses just in the U.S. (NewYorkTime)In Austin Frakt article he states “ Opioids now cause more deaths than any other drug, more than 16,000 in 2010.” The rate of which teenagers use drugs is a “tremendous increase”(Frakt). Patients with chronic pain use opioids which are highly addictive.Opioid misuse is becoming greater each day. It is having a negative impact on our society because a lot of lives have been taken through the misuse of opioids, which will continue to affect humans negatively as time goes on. Opioid are needed to for chronic pain and are pain killers. This problem is significant and needs to be solved , because plenty of lives have been taken through using opioids and need to be taken serious before it’s too late and becomes way more known to people .To solve this doctor’s should further limit the use of opioids, so less lives would be taken and a step closer to solve solve such a huge problem( opioid misuse). While Alford believes doctors should not further limit the prescription of opioid- based medication because he believes doctors know what they are doing and they should prescribe the medication based on their knowledge,this position is ultimately problematic because doctors may not know their history with drug use or whether they have a higher risk than others to most likely get addicted. Rather there should be a further limit where only people, who are in a lot of pain should be able to use opioids and there should be guidelines to follow before prescribing
