Andy Dehart, Discovery Channel Shark Advisor, spoke about the North Carolina shark over fishing problem. The shark populations on the East Coast were extremely over-fished which lead to the over population of sting rays, a main food-stock for sharks. The stingrays in turn decimated the shellfish populations on the East Coast, leading to calm and shellfish shortages. This shows that sharks are necessary for every eco-system and their destruction affects us in more ways then we can imagine. Sharks are very at-risk for over-fishing because they take a long time to reach the stage where they can reproduce and in general only have a few pups when they give birth.
Would you like to to be stuck in a net not able to move and die of hunger. Gill nets are a large net placed in the water letting the fish swim in getting stuck. Gillnet fishing should be illegal in north america because it causes harm to boats humans and land animals, it is inhuman, and it harms endangered fish. Gillnets cause harm to boats humans and land animals. There are 18 reported cases of boats running over gillnets In the us alone.
To begin with, we must have some history on fishing worldwide, but most of the entire North American continent, in the Atlantic. Ocean fishes have been shot by humans for hundreds of years. Due to overfishing, they are beyond their maximum sustainable yields. Scientists are not sure if the rising water temperatures are responsible for poor egg hatching or UV radiation from reduced ozone, but bottom trawling has had the worst effect. As one after another species of fish have disappeared, commercial fishermen have turned to other species.
While it may be surprising, humans screw up a lot. The consequences of overfishing cod are vast and more impactful than one would think. Depleting one species of fish is a disaster not just for the fish but the world around. This is not only an environmental issue, but a social and cultural problem as well. Cod by Mark Kurlansky is an excellent telling of the story of Cod, and Kurlansky weaves together disciplines in a fantastic manner.
In addition to these negative effects, the loss of sharks will also mean the loss of a species that survived for millions of years. While some argue that overfishing provides much-needed jobs and resources, these arguments seem minor in comparison to the major loss that we are accruing in the U.S. alone. Sharks play a massive role in their aquatic ecosystem, and the loss of sharks will cause a ripple effect throughout the food chain. To elaborate, the fewer sharks around, the more seals can go freely and overconsume the fish population, dwindling our fish supply. Laurel Irvine once stated, in The Delicate Importance of Sharks and Pinnipeds, that without sharks, the seal population would grow “unchecked without natural predation, it could permanently damage the ecological health of western shores”.
It is believed that the Cro-Magnon Man had fished to survive over forty thousand years ago. Fishing was a way of life for many to survive and continues to be a vital resource today. Until 1800’s where overfishing was introduced. Fisherman fished for whales for their blubber to fuel their oil lamps. The term “overfishing” is used when a species is killed too quickly and not allowing their species to recover and reproduce properly.

mainly talked about the Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing both in US domestic waters as well as high seas. IUU fishing impacts sustainable global fisheries, food security, marine ecosystems, and conservation and management measures that protect marine resources. I learned a bunch of new things from this presentation.
