Don’t Ban the Breed Many people all throughout our community own and love a dog. Most dogs are treated with respect and commonly viewed as part of the family. They are allowed in public places and considered gentle, loving creatures. Unfortunately, the public does not view pit bulls in this same positive way. Instead, pit bulls are commonly stereotyped as dangerous, aggressive, and a general menace to everything. This false representation of the breed has led to many unfair restrictions of their ownership being passed. Legislation prevents them from playing a typical role in society. It places several limits as to the places that they can visit, where they can live, and has altered society's views of their character. Pit bulls are stereotypically viewed as dangerous and aggressive, when in reality this is not the case. The media and many stories often portray pit bulls as extremely vicious and unable to lead a normal life. There are often graphic pictures or images that simply don’t tell the whole story. These stereotypes are inaccurate and misleading. They don’t allow the entire picture to be view and place an unnecessary negative image into many people’s minds. While it’s true that there are small handful of aggressive pit bulls, most are actually sweet, loving, and very devoted to their owners. The behavior of these few dogs should not be able to impact the lives of the rest of the breed. It is unfortunate that the few that have misbehaved now represent the entire population. Another major problem with legislation about pit bulls is that it does not accurately depict the breed’s purpose in today. The legislation is based off of the principals that pit bulls are used exclusively for dog fighting. While pit bulls were bred and used for fighting at one point in time, these activities are now banned. Because dog fighting is now outlawed and only done in illegal
