This can become a burden to those who have to purchase drugs regularly due to an illness of theirs or a loved one. The Pharmaceutical Industry is a billion-dollar industry with a huge backing from one of the biggest interest groups known as Pharma. This makes it harder for politicians to fight for lower drug prices and get any kind of legislation passed through congress. In the United States Drug manufacturers in the United States set their own rates, but internationally that is not normal. Nations that have national health care programs have government entities that either negotiate the prices or decide not to cover drugs whose prices they see as unreasonable. Negotiating drug prices does not happen in the United States.
