As an American do you ever feel like you need more privacy? Do you think that the United States needs more surveillance? These two questions have always clashed with each other in U.S. history, but how much privacy and surveillance should Americans have? Many Americans feel that there is not enough privacy from others, especially when it comes to technology. They don’t like the feeling of being watched all the time. Some people feel that currently “we are in the midst of a new age of privacy deprivation, where it’s almost impossible to run away and hide, to gain total solitude, or even attain basic privacy from the outside world” (Kurlander). According to Cory Doctorow, someone who volunteers developing this new technology, many software programs that protect people’s privacy are too complicated for those with average computer skills. This means that people are more likely to risk the lack of privacy than go through the frustration of downloading the software. In an article Doctorow says, “The time has come to create privacy tools for normal people – people with a normal level of technical competence. That is, all of us, no matter what our level of technical expertise, need privacy” (Doctorow). His solution would make it easier for everyone to keep their personal information, etc. private from others. One advantage to these programs will be that you can download them onto your own devices instead of it changing the entire internet system.
