Currently in the world, over sixty-five million people are displaced, over twenty-two million people are refugees, and ten million people are stateless (UNHCR). Fifty-five percent of refugees are from Afghanistan, South Sudan, and Syria (UNHCR). The U.N defines a refugee as someone who is fleeing persecution, war, or violence at the 1951 Geneva Convention (Ted-Ed). The current migrant crisis in Europe is the worst seen since World War II. Countless people fled their country for many reasons covered by the 1951 Geneva Convention.
