I strongly don't believe australia has a refugee problem like mainstream media portrays in fact Australia should take in more refugees and asylum seeker and save thousands of people lives as a responsibility for this nation. I have chosen this topic because its close to my heart. My family and I came over to Australia as refugees to escape our war torn country Sudan, But as of recent our extended family couldn't join us here. Australia took us in saved and changed our lives for the better. Everyone deserve to feel safe Its a basic human right. Under the Humanitarian Program, Australia accepts a certain number of people every year. The Australian Government in the 2014-15 financial year, it provide 13,750 places in the Humanitarian Program. But while most refugees who are resettled in Australia come through the UN, this isn't the only way it happens. When it comes to the total number of refugees recognised and resettled by a country both through united nations programs and independence programs , Australia is ranked 25th. This is a poor effort especially with the amount of land and resources Australia has. We have the potential to become a world leader and role model in refugee intake.
