Rock and roll is just beginning to be accepted as an art form, as opposed to just another musical trend. It’s only been popular since the mid twentieth century. However, despite the genre’s young age, it has hugely impacted the US, and the rest of the world. It’s a versatile genre, one that each generation can make into their own. Due to this, it reflects the values of the past sixty years far better than classical or jazz music is able to, yet still appears to be resilient, not just a passing fad like pop music.

Rock, like jazz, also usually features very much improvisation. However, it is difficult to really pin down the differences between rock and other genres, as there is really no specific sound to rock. Some sounds are more common than others, but there is no uniformity. The most notable distinction between rock and other genres is therefore not the sound, but the themes. Rock is the sound of revolution; it is, typically, music for the younger generation. It values sincerity, creativity, and experimentation. While jazz and classical each tend to have certain guidelines restricting them, rock has evolved to be flexible, changing to fit the values of the current generation.

Many feel that rock music has no place being studied beside more traditional musical genres. Rock and roll is a newer art form, which makes it harder to study objectively- almost anyone you meet today will have a bias one way or another when it comes to rock music. However, its recent status in music history doesn’t make it any less valid than older genres. Rock and roll has shaped many generations across the world; it would make no sense to ignore its impact on history. Rock may not have been a part of our culture for as long as classical or even jazz, but it is still
