This world has become filled with unimaginable violence and a significant amount of deaths caused by mass public shooters. The targets of the mass shootings have been places that have a gun-free zone sign posted on the wall. In 1995, the gun-free school zone act was passed which prohibited a person, with possession of a firearm, to step foot on school grounds. This act would allow certain people to be exempt from the gun-free school zone, which includes retired law enforcement officers and a person licensed to carry a concealed weapon. This bill would keep a school relatively safe because it would mean a person that does not have a license to carry a concealed firearm would be charged with a felony. It would also allow a licensed gun carrier to use their firearm for self-defense and the defense of surrounding victims. However, this bill has since be revised and passed with the deletion of the former exemptions. The revision can lead to an increase in school shootings, which will result in more deaths and injuries. …show more content…

The gun-free zone allows a shooter to execute their plan, knowing that there are low chances of people interfering. Lott also states, “Elliot Rodger, who fatally shot three people in Santa Barbara, Calif., explained his reasoning in his 141-page “manifesto.” He ruled out various targets because he worried that someone with a gun would stop his killing spree”(Lott). Elliot Rodger chose to shoot three people at UCSB because he knew the college was a gun-free zone and he would be able to accomplish his plan. Shooters are so consumed with anger and vengeance that they will think of everything possible that will affect their plan of revenge. The revised bill, SB 707, will put an even bigger target on the backs of schools because a person who is trained to use a firearm for their defense and others, will not be able to fire
