All children in America are encouraged to participate in being active for at least 60 minutes a day, but some kids can’t do that, due to the fact that they have disabilities. About 18 percent of U.S. kids live with this problem every day of their life. Most every child plays a sport for two reasons, one to be active and second, to just have fun. “ Participating in the sports can help instill a sense of self - confidence and improve skills in a relationship building and working as part of a team. Being active increases the number of white blood cells which are called “infection fighters”. Their job is to, keep the germs out. Constipation is also another thing, being active can help speed up the digestion, and having the bowel movements be less painful. Although some children’s abilities may not always them to move or be active, there are many sports that can be modified for special needs children to participate in. The Special Needs Olympics is a program where people with disabilities can come and compete. Special Olympics competetions are held every day, nationally, and locally, adding up to more than 70,000 events a year. “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” - Motto of the Special Olympics. Special Olympics is a global nonprofit organization, serving nearly 200 million people with disabilities. This organization has a year- rounded training. The Olympics are held every two years. They offer over 30 Olympics type individual and teams sports for people with intellectual disabilities. “Special needs athletics is growing strong and building to new heights giving kids and adults an equal opportunity to play, learn, grow, and succeed in life.” (ESPN) Parents are encouraged to put their special needs children in as many sports as they can. People donate their time to come be of assistance to make this program possible. “The overarching mission of special needs athletics is to provide support and opportunities through various sports for individuals with special needs and their families.”
