In 2018, over 1.7 million students took the SAT. Living in the twenty-first century, most people have taken or plan to take the SAT’s. But, the evidence shows that these tests are not accurate. So why do colleges still use them as a measurement of a person’s potential success in earning a degree in college? Without a Doubt, Colleges should not use standardized tests to determine a person’s success in college. To begin, standardized tests no longer accurately measure a person’s potential success. There are certainly people who can remember getting bad test scores even though they have good grades. Eric McGuire, VP of Environment and communication at Ithaca College says, “Not only do these tests fail to give a truly accurate assessment of a students ability, but they also bar a diverse range of students from applying.”(http://www.creativitypost.com). McGuire is saying the tests are stopping colleges from getting a variety of students. Likewise, it is hard to make standardized tests fair and unbiased. Even though this bias is not intended, it is still noticeably present in the standardized tests. This hurts the scores of minorities taking the test. GPA exhibits students work ethic for four years. A student with a good GPA will most likely do better in the real world and college than someone with a better SAT score. William Hiss, the former Dean of Admissions for Bates College says, “The evidence of the study clearly shows that high school GPA matters. Four year, long-term evidence of self-discipline, intellectual curiosity, and hard work; that’s what matters the most.”(https://www.pbs.org).
