Over the past twenty-nine years, Florida Lottery has had more than 35,000 players become millionaires and has given more that 52.4 billion dollars in prices. Many think of the lottery as a gift that keeps on giving. Such people believe winning the lottery will solve all their problems—financial and personal included—with just a snap of their fingers or a swipe of their credit card. However, scientific research shows 1,900 winners filed for bankruptcy within five years after their ‘victory’. Based on many scientific studies, the lottery does more harm than good.

In the short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, she talks about this little community where everything isn’t exactly how it appears. In the story everyone seems polite and inviting at first until they play “The Lottery.” The lottery is a tradition the people participate in once every year. Usually winning the lottery would be a good thing but not in this story. Tessi Huchinson and Mr. Summers are two main characters in the community.
In the story there are a lot of clues that say that the lottery is about tradition, like the lottery itself. The lottery is a tradition that “The original paraphernalia for the lottery had been lost long ago, and the black box now resting on the stool had been put into use even before Old Man Warner, the oldest man in town, was born” Paragraph 5: Line 1. According to another statement by Old Man Warner “Seventy-seventh year I been in the lottery,” Paragraph 14: Line 17. The two quotes show that the tradition of the lottery in the town outlives the oldest member of the town.
When old man Warner talks about other towns ending the lottery he seems very displeased and that could be seen as resentment because it's been his "Seventy-seventh year…in the lottery…” (par. 42). But in reality, he thinks that the event is not as it used to be and that the town has gotten soft. He even goes as far as to call the younger people who are getting rid of the lottery a “‘Pack of crazy fools,’" (par. 34). This irony goes to show how some don't even realize that their tradition is crazy and that is why the lottery will most likely continue to
There are several things in the world that can make a person happy, including sports, animals, and food. Nevertheless, the biggest thing that makes people the happiest is money. People find many ways to receive money for themselves, one way is winning the lottery. The lottery plays an important role in distributing money, while many people decide to participate in the game. During today’s society, the lottery is a competitive game where people enter to win loads of money.
The chances of winning the lottery is one in 175 million yet 143.7 Million people are said to play the lottery every. single. year. Although many will argue that this is beneficial to raise state revenues for education I can disagree completely. The reason I disagree is because this does not help education AT ALL as it only makes up 5% of student funds, not only that
The Lottery is a story by Shirley Jackson. It is about a town that has a type of stoning event called the lottery. It is basically like gambling with your life. Each person has to pull out a slip of paper out of a black box. There are enough slips for each member of the town.
Evrik Stokes Professor Margaret Snyder English 102 27 February 2023 The Lottery Theme Analysis Essay The Lottery by Shirley Jackson is a short story about a village that performs annual sacrifice to ensure that their corn grows. The village chooses who they are going to execute (via stoning) by drawing a paper from a box with the name of the victim. The main theme of The Lottery is that appeals to tradition are illogical and therefore should not be used to justify one’s actions.

Throughout centuries, traditions and rituals have had the ability to control one’s behavior. In Shirley Jackson’s, “The Lottery”, she tells the reader of a small village. On the surface, this community may seem relatively normal. However, despite the picturesque appeal, this falsely serene village has a distinct deceitful flaw. On June 27th, every year, a lottery takes place.

What was your reaction to the story “The Lottery”? My reaction to the story “The Lottery” is furious and outrage because of how this lottery plot went down. For instances, all the towns families gathered for this lottery event that happens once a year in June. Family bonds are important of the lottery event, but family bonds are broken due to the increase in the killing cruelty.
The money pays for any school expenses, provides items for the classrooms, and prevents budget cuts. Lottery is a great benefit for schools. Lottery is beneficial to the government because its an easy way to increase more revenues without imposing more taxes. Then out of nowhere “Coming into a quick pile of cash usually means that people will come out of the woodwork looking to get a piece of your pie.” This in a nutshell means when you strike it big, you'll have lots of new friends and family members you have never met.
