Recently there has been a lot of debate on the sugar tax that has been implemented on June 2016. The sugar tax is a tax on soft drinks, sports drinks, and any other drinks with added sugar. Many people have been upset with this new law because it affects them greatly but they don’t understand the great effect it has on them and our environment. This is a very important topic because the only way for people to change there life is to start with little items like sugary drinks. There should be a sugar tax because it helps reduce obesity and heart disease issues, bottles and cans, and the harmful dyes in soft drinks. There have been many scientific studies that support the idea saying that the sugar tax will help prevent obesity. In countries such as mexico, instituted the sugar tax in 2013 by putting a 10% charge on sugary drinks and 6% of sugary drinks fell in the first year while sales of water went up by 4% ( Senthilingam). We can see the effect the sugar tax had made in a country in just one year. Steven Gortmaker, a professor of practice of health sociology at Harvard school says that once people realize the big money increase the sugar tax has done they will stop buying these drinks and gear toward other drinks that don’t have this tax (Gotmarker). This shows that the effect of not buying sugary drinks will truly work when people realize it’s just not worth it. They will gear toward water or juices with no added sugar and it will tremendously change your life with better teeth, skin, joints, kidneys and much more other benefits ( Hughes). This demonstrates that having the sugar tax is more reasonable than getting sick and having to deal with the health issues that can affect you.
