“We have a responsibility to significantly expand our refugee targets and give more victims of war a safe haven in Canada. The resettling of vulnerable refugees is a clear demonstration of this. While our plan is ambitious, it reflects Canada’s commitment to share responsibility and offer protection to those who need it. Canada must once again be regarded as the compassionate, generous country we’ve always been.” This was a statement by the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and which summarizes the aim for the actions Canada is planning to take in regards to the agenda of guaranteeing sanctuary for Syrian refugees. Canada believes that the overflow of more than 3 million Syrian refugees is a global problem that should be met with the cooperation of all nations.

It is a governmental program that aims to bring in 25,000 Syrian refugees as soon as possible through a five-phase national plan which includes: identifying the refugees overseas, processing visas and health tests, transporting them to Canada, welcoming, and settling them in communities so they can successfully build a new life. There is especially much emphasis on the security and health screenings overseas that will ensure safety for both the local Canadians and the refugees. These tests are conducted by Canadian officials and will include verifying visas and important documents, conducting interviews, and doing thorough health checks for any signs of illness. There will also be strict identity confirmations prior to departure, and upon arrival. This will make certain that the most vulnerable refugees gain the benefits of the initiative and that the Canadians stay safe and healthy. Through this initiative, Canada welcomed its first 10,000 Syrian refugees on January 12, 2016 and the numbers keep increasing,
