Syrian Refugees should be taken in by the surrounding muslim countries in the region instead of being imported into the United States. While many nations hold the United States to a standard of an “open arms” policy towards refugees, we must first take care of our own needs before we can help others. Syria’s oil rich neighbors are more than capable of hosting the large number of refugees, if not at least funding their basic needs. However the international community should be actively pursuing a solution to the Syrian conflict so that Syrians can remain at home.

This is where the United States could take appropriate measures to help without putting our own security at risk. Countries such as Saudi Arabia, who have more resources, should also be encouraged to participate in this humanitarian crisis right at their “back door”. “Aid groups are calling for multi-billion-dollar international investment in Middle Eastern countries hosting Syrian refugees to replace what they say has been half-hearted humanitarian assistance.” (Aid Group Seeks) If Saudi Arabia is not willing to take in refugees they should at least support surrounding nations. By surrounding countries taking in the refugees it will also provide a smoother transition back to their homeland once it is possible to re-enter. Being hosted in countries with similar beliefs and cultures would also make displaced Syrians feel more welcome and safer and make it easier for them to transition into the everyday system in the
