The word addiction for most people, usually produces pictures of dark alleys, dirty used needles and strung out “nobodies” laying on the side of the street. But in our time and day, reality paints a dramatically different image which is one of doctors, lawyers, and soccer moms. Addiction has many different definitions, but this kind is not confined to just illegal drugs and alcohol. Our society today has been completely consumed with technology by all forms such as computers, cell phones, and tablets. The pros and cons of these devices have been presented and debated continuously throughout the past years and concerns are growing worse. The scary thing? I hadn’t told myself to go and reach for my phone. It always seemed that my brain sort of did it on its own. Today it seems to be considered as a norm that people are constantly checking their devices, not for a missed text or call, but for endless sites that fuel our release of mini dopamine squirts by sending us notifications from apps, social sites and whatever else they have to spit at us. In the article, “Student 'addiction' to technology 'similar to drug cravings', study finds” Andrew Hough begins by stating a research conducted that contains a statistical number that tells a story for itself. He goes on by stating, “four in five students had significant mental and physical distress, panic, confusion and extreme isolation when forced to unplug from technology for an entire day.” In other words, the evidence is showing that our minds have wholly adapted to these devices becoming not a substance of privilege, but a mandatory item in order to go on with our daily routines. For many, they celebrate the fact that our technological devices have become nothing short of our personal survival tool. Is there any other tool in the world or history that has developed a relationship as close as the ones with our technological devices? The truth be told is that regardless of how much we feel compelled to these interruptions, we have become so addicted to them that it doesn’t even signify as an interruption to us in the first place.
