Technology is constantly evolving. Laptops, phones, ipads, etc. come out each year with new advances; faster internet, new apps, better programs, increased storage capacity, upgraded cameras and much more. In recent years there have been numerous efforts to integrate technology into schools. Some initiatives have been successful whereas others have failed, and many people argue that technological integration is a waste of money and resources, and therefore has no place in schools. However, the problem is not with technology itself, but rather a lack of sustainable education technology initiatives. Schools are spending large sums of money on technology without prior knowledge of how effective and sustainable the technology will be. Administrators are making technology funding decisions without being in the classroom and knowing what is most beneficial to students and teachers. Districts should research pros and cons of multiple types of technologies instead of buying into brands or blindly spending money without creating a long-term plan for the technological purchases. I propose to invest in human resources to ensure ed- tech programs are sustainable and affordable. Districts should hire people who are well versed in technology to handle ed-tech initiatives. These people will be able to select the best devices and software within the budget put in place by the district. This would save districts money because they wouldn’t be spending millions of dollars on devices that will only last them a short time or that are not best suited for the needs of the teachers and students. Education Technology is a relatively new conversation within education it is important to keep in mind that solutions to achieve ed-tech sustainability may become more abundant as research and trials
