In the last century with with the development of plastic and a growing population littering has become a bigger issue than ever. That being said, it should come to no surprise that Texas, like many places, struggles to stop littering. According to wallethub.com Texas ranks 37th in the nation for eco-friendly behaviors (Kiernan, 2017). That places us in the bottom quarter of the nation. It feels like no matter where you go in Texas litter is everywhere. From our beaches to our parking lots. It is especially an issue for our roadways. An article titled Reducing Roadside Litter on takecareoftexas.org stated, “ Each year, nearly 435 million pieces of visible litter accumulate on Texas roadways (Take Care of Texas, 2017).” This happens because of sheer laziness and convenience. According to an article on dontmesswithteaxas.org titled Litter Facts, “You can be fined $500 every time you litter in Texas. And, if what your toss weighs more than 5 pounds, you may have to pay up to $2,000 (Don’t mess with Texas).” Even though littering could cost you up to $2,000 people still choose to do it. Dontmesswithtexas.org also stated that, “1 in 4 Texans admits to littering in the past year (Don’t mess with Texas).” If a quarter of our population is damaging our state then this is a serious issue. Clearly stronger action needs to be taken and State lawmakers felt the same way. An article titled Think twice before littering in Texas. It could cost you time- and money stated the the new law “lets judges sentence anyone caught and convicted of littering to as many as 60 hours of community service — picking up trash or working at a recycling center in their home county (Tinsley, 2017).” The law is relatively new and we have yet to see if it has decreased the amount of littering occurring however it shows that the state is concerned and feels that action needs to be
