In certain areas of the United States, using a handheld cell phone is outlawed. This is due to the concern of young and adult drivers being distracted by the cellular device and not paying attention to the road. I agree with the states who outlaw this practice because of the realistic dangers associated being distracted while driving on the road and increased chance of accidents. Protesters of this law may be outraged because of their necessity for cellphone usage on the road, but bluetooth technology provides a compromise between the two sides. Nonetheless, it is a pressing safety issue that cannot be overlooked. This in turn greatly increases the chance of them steering off road, not noticing traffic lights/signs, not paying attention to merging traffic, or even worse, causing an accident. Because they are not paying attention to the road, they become a risk to themselves and to other drivers, greatly increasing the chance of an accident occurring. Even if they are texting or playing on their phone while the car is stopped, it is still dangerous simply because they are not paying attention to their surroundings. They could miss the traffic light, hold up traffic, or even accidentally hit a pedestrian if they suddenly start moving the car again without looking. While texting or playing on the phone is a big reason why using the cellphone while driving is unsafe, taking a call while driving is also an issue. Although a driver who is good at multi-tasking may be able to successfully drive and have a cellular conversation with someone, it is still distracting to an extent because you have to commit some part of your body and mental focus to holding up the cellphone to your ear.
