Texting and driving I believe is one of America's #1 problem. This issue is not just with high school student but also with adults as well. I believe the penalty for texting and driving and/or operating a cellular device while driving is not a significant enough fine in some state. State like Iowa and Indiana, for example, have a ban on the use of cellular device but have a low penalty amount set in place for offenders. Iowa charges individuals thirty dollars for texting while driving and Indiana charges a maximum of thirty-five dollars and fifty cent for first time offenders. The penalty for texting and driving should not be left up to each state to deem whether it's punishable or not. The issue with texting and driving is not just a state issue; it’s a nationwide issue. The country as a whole has a problem with texting and driving. As a service member we are ban from the using or trying to use our cell phone while operating a motor vehicle. I believe this rule should be a nationwide rule. I believe there should be an executive order placing a ban the use of cellular device while operation a motor vehicle.
The penalty for texting and driving should be as severe as driving while under the influence. Text while driving is no different than driving while being under the influence. A person loses focus of what's happening on the road or around them and lack the swiftness of braking if there was a need for an abrupt stop as a person would normally have if they had their complete attention on the road.
