A deadly killer: texting and driving Since telephones were first invented in the late 1800s, they have taken the world by storm. First it was those old telephones mounted on walls, then portable ones with a rotary dial, then phones with cords, and phones without cords, flip phones, and then finally those smartphones. Many people have phones and it seems like they are permanently glued to them. Smart phones, or flip phones, it does not matter. These phones have numerous nifty little features that make life so much easier. On the old models there used to be just calling and/or texting and maybe a camera. With phones, people can contact their relatives and friends in any number of different ways. While phones are useful, they can also be very deadly, especially when they are combined with driving. People are even using them while driving even though they, for the most part, have been taught to not text and drive. The whole point of driving is to get from point A to point B safely; their friends can wait, their lives cannot. Texting while driving is really a deadly killer. It has killed countless people. According to Melinda J. Helbock, every year, about a half million people die due to texting and driving (Helbock, para. 1). Robert Gordon, the senior vice president of the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America, said “insurers also blame smart phones for growing problems on the road. The use of electronic devices while driving is likely the most significant factor in the rise in road fatalities,” (Silva, 2016, para 7). This is a problem that cannot be ignored any longer. How can this deadly distraction be solved? There are many solutions, but one is most prevalent and will definitely help the body count to go down.
