Taking your eyes off the road for one second is the moment you make a bad decision. Teenagers and young adults have numerous distractions that cause them to take their eyes off the road. Taking your hands off the wheel, eyes off the road, or mind off driving all cause distractions. Cell phones, the radio, and people in your car are all distractions we commonly see today. These distractions can not only take your life but the life of others. “Each day in the United States 9 people are killed and more than 1,000 people are injured in crashes involving a distracted driver. Eliminating distractions while driving is nearly impossible because of the growing technological advances. I believe that if more people become aware of the serious dangers associated with distractions, it would lessen. About 75% to 80% of teenagers have access to a cell phone. This could be a way to get the importance of safe driving out to them. Another implication to help prevent the impulse teens have to use their phone and drive is an app that allows parents to disable their child’s phone at any time while driving. Although this may not work forever, persistence is the key to decreasing the number of accidents. Another key point is to target the age group that has the most problem with this: teens and young adults. If teens see the importance of driving without distractions, they could start preventing accidents themselves. They could prevent accidents by making sure their phone is put away somewhere they won’t be tempted to text back or answer calls. Turning down the radio and making sure all passengers are wearing seatbelts are ways teens can take this problem into their own hands.
