Tobacco Free: Why We Should All Be Earlier this year East Mississippi Community College (EMCC) adopted a tobacco free campus policy. This prohibits the use of all tobacco products anywhere on the campus. There have been ashtrays outside since the college was established in 1927 that were removed earlier this year when the policy went into effect. There is no risk-free secondhand smoke. Brief exposure to it can cause health risk. ("CDC - Fact Sheet - Secondhand Smoke - Smoking & Tobacco Use") People do not want to be surrounded by the chance that their health is being risked, while trying to get an education because of someone else’s decision to use tobacco. It is especially harmful for someone with asthma. It is more likely to cause coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath associated with asthma. ("Smoking and Asthma") It makes it more difficult for students with asthma to be on campus. They are much more likely to choose a tobacco-free school to continue their education. A tobacco free campus is more aesthetically pleasing, as well. The way a campus looks can affect a student’s, as well as their parents, decision about a school. Who wants to attend a school where you can find cigarettes lying around or see people walking around with chewing tobacco in their mouths? It is not at all a very pleasing sight to see. While I am sure there are many schools that have yet to go tobacco free, I fully support EMCC’s decision to do so. It can only have a positive effect on the campus. Why would you not want to attend a tobacco free school? It is healthier, more accessible, as well as more aesthetically pleasing. I am all for tobacco free
