Drugs has been with the human civilization for many decades. They have been used as medical purposes and recreational purposes. In the late 1960s, recreational drug use rises in U.S. alarming the nation on the urgency of dealing with this issue. President Richard Nixon formally declared war on drugs to make U.S a better place without drugs. Vast sums of money were used to prohibit illegal drugs in U.S. for many decades. War on drugs have been a failure because the government has spent more money on putting drug related criminals in the jail rather than using the money to help students have better education and this war targeted towards black people even though there are other races that are criminals. …show more content…

Richard Branson states, “A Pew study says it costs the U.S. an average of $30,000 a year to incarcerate an inmate, but the nation spends only an average $11,665 per public school student.”U.S is spending more money on confining drug related criminals when there are easier and cheaper ways like helping them break away from drug addiction. The money should be used in helping the students’ education since they are the future of U.S. Branson also states, “A Cato study says legalizing drugs would save the U.S. about $41 billion a year in enforcing the drug laws.” That $41 million could be used to improve America such as in education.
