Paper #1 Whaling is used for many different reason some good and some bad, and there is a debate going on, on how whaling should be taken care of. Each side has some very good points on what we should do, but there can be a compromise. When you look at both sides the nationalist side have some really good points, but some points need to be looked at again. One of the articles talks about how the native American tribes have been hunting whales for years and how it’s a way of life. These people aren’t just killing the whales for fun or for testing, each whale is hunted and ate or used for spiritual ceremonies. In Japan they were still killing the whales even when the IWC banned commercial whaling in 1986, under the exemption of research even though they didn’t need to kill them for the research they needed. They plan on killing 333 minke whales within a 15-year span all for research. Do we really need that many whales to test on, is what everyone is asking. If where going to kill whales, we at least need to have a set amount. The transnationalist arguments are not that strong, all they talk about is how the number of whales are going down and are getting killed in nets by ship catches, hunted, or by pollution. Whales live for up to 70- 150 years if we keep killing them all they will be distinct. They say in the article that even cartoon characters want to save the whales, how does that matter, its just people who want to save them. They want to save whales but they don’t have enough arguments to try and save them. They want all the whales to stop getting killed they think we just kill them because. Its not like we are killing them all just because we want to. I would have to agree with the nationalist side but we can meet in the middle of both of the sides and work it out.
