Another day Sarah comes home exhausted from swim practice. She showers, has dinner with her family, and by the time she is ready to start homework, her body is ready to go to bed. Sarah is a junior in high school and a typical teenage girl. She is on student council, the swim team, and takes a couple of honors classes. She has a busy schedule, but everyone else does too. Sarah prepares herself to spend the next 3 hours on homework even though it is already 8pm and she knows that she is going to wake up exhausted only to repeat this schedule all over again. Just like Sarah, most teenagers are not getting enough sleep because they have to be at school at an early time and are not able to go to bed any earlier. To start later would cause disruptions in school districts, but is worth the hassle of changing the schedule. The generation that is currently attending school will someday be the generation that leads. With this in mind, it is important that the school system give them every opportunity to succeed now, so they can succeed later. An important part of the students success in school and later in life, will be from getting enough rest at night. Most people do not take sleep deprivation in adolescents and teenagers seriously enough and do not see it as a public health issue. They feel that it is the student’s responsibility to get enough sleep. The people that argue this fail to realize that the school system is not giving the teenagers a fair chance in order to do this by having school start early in the morning. The perspective of the school system needs to change and recognize that it is their purpose to ensure that they are helping the students stay healthy in order to learn. This issue is not about a want for teenagers to feel well rested every day, but a requirement for them in order that they succeed in
