"Every question possesses a power that is lost in the answer." In the words of Moishe the Beadle. In other words, questions are often very powerful while answers are merely too simple. Nevertheless, we still ask continuously; Were the Jews really wrong for denying reality during the Holocaust? While there is no perfect answer, when looking at a survival standpoint, I must exclaim that the Jews were indeed wring for denying the reality that was to come. Even though it was crucial for the Jewish prisoners to stay positive in order to not loose hope, denying reality did not make the war go away like they thought it would. Furthermore, when the time came, they were not prepared for what was to come. They were already dead. The townspeople of Sighet were warned several times of what was to come for them. Even Moishe the Beadle's accounts-the honest man whom the people had respected-were shrugged off. The Jews were not only denying reality, at that point they were simply ignoring it. They continued to live their days as if it was like any other. Workers continued to work, students still studied, and the innocent children remained running and playing on the streets. Everything was "normal". Even when the people heard of the Fascists tormenting towns nearby, they continued to ignore it all. It meant nothing to them at the time. It was useless. According to a study, pessimists are more likely to spend their time bracing themselves for unpleasant possibilities. Had the Jewish prisoners dot denied and ignored reality, they would've been prepared for the war to come, if not physically, mentally. They would have been able to wire their brains to not loose hope when the times went rough. If so, more Jews would have lived to see the American tank at the gates of Buchenwald.
