First, I think that college football players should get paid because they need extra money today for college. For the first time in history, the NCAA is allowing colleges to pay their athletes cash to cover the cost of things like student fees, laundry and lunch (Cnn). To open enroll in a college out of state it is $22,958 and getting paid for any kind of sport could really help pay the cost (Prepscholar).
Have you ever wondered why National Football League players, known as NFL players, make so much money? I think NFL players should continue to earn such high salaries for the reasons that follow; they entertain millions, risk getting life altering injuries, and create loads of revenue. College is a place for students to obtain a college degree and help them to get ahead on their “real world” careers. Athletic departments in college have become huge money incomes in the past ten years; college football and basketball are even shown on the television. This has resulted in many believing these athletes deserve to be paid for their contribution to the schools athletic income. The NCAA has been around for more than a 100 years. They have developed and added rules to make it safer for athletes to compete over the years. NCAA uses sanctions to control school programs and their players. Academic sanctions cause schools to go deep into their players grades and eligibility with some school changing grades, causing some college athletes ineligible to play. Players could make just enough money to be forced to make choices that can pave the way for more responsible decision making when the financial stakes become high. Many players will learn the value of money and the responsibility that comes from holding down a job. During this year’s college football bowl season, the spotlight turned away from the actual games and towards conversations surrounding star players skipping bowl games. LSU running back, Leonard Fournette and Stanford running back, Christian McCaffrey both decided to skip the final game of their collegiate career in fear of injuring themselves prior to the NFL draft- a highly controversial move that makes sense. While these players get an incredible athletic and academic experience playing college football, there’s only one thing on these players’ minds: the league. Players are willing to put their body on the line while these universities are making millions of dollars off them just for the chance to a part of the 1.6% of college football players to be drafted by an NFL team. These players dream of the NFL for many reasons, whether it’s the love of the game, competitive drive, or to simply support their family.
Imagine earning a football scholarship from a large, in-state university. It’s the first day of school and you’re excited for the season to start. Weeks pass, practices go by, and you notice that you’ve been working harder than most college students, juggling classes, practices and workouts, and a minimum wage job to be able to eat and buy necessary items. You find yourself struggling to keep your grades up because practices and your job are taking up time you could be using to study and prepare for some tests.

The million dollar question; should college athletes be paid? This is an immense debate, but if you were to ask me, I would say yes, college athletes should be paid. There are a plethora of reasons why college athletes should get paid. College athletes should get paid because of the amount of time they put into their sport, the amount of money everyone else is making off of them, and their overall importance to the school. There are a myriad of reasons that people can argue the opposite way, but, the reasons they should get paid definitely outweigh the reasons they shouldn’t get paid.
College athletes deserve to be paid because they are the only ones not being paid in the college sports industry. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) generates eleven billion dollars annually, some of which could, and should go to college athletes. “USA Today reported last year just how much money the top 10 coaches in college football made. Nick Saban from Alabama topped the list earning roughly $5.5 million in 2013 alone” (Seibold). The coaches are making millions of dollars and the players aren’t.
