Supporting Homeless Veterans Almost 60% of all veterans say that the VA is doing “only fair” or a “poor” job at taking care of the problems faced by serviceman (Chandrasekaren). Current soldiers, as well as veterans, are facing problems like not be able to find a job because of a disability or not receiving compensation for an injury that occurred while in the service. Many wait months upon months just to be seen by a doctor. The men and women protecting this country deserve the best help available, and they are receiving very little or no help at all. Health care, benefits, and simply having money to survive are not problems that these individuals need to be facing after putting their lives on the line for us. The Office of Refugee Resettlement has about 1.56 billion dollars to spend on people, and even at that large number, it is still exceeded over time (Phillips). It often takes months for a disabled veteran to see a doctor or receive the treatment that they need. When a refugee touches American soil, they are immediately looked over by a doctor and shortly after that they are given the treatment that those doctors decide are necessary. For example, Syrian refugees are given homes, hot meals, money, and they are also being treated for things like illness, broken bones, open wounds, and even depression. An article regarding the resettlement process states, “Once they’re here, the federal government has an entire office dedicated to resettling them, making sure they get medical assistance and some spending money which is around $1000. They are also given training to learn the English language and get a job” (Phillips). This means that every single person that steps onto our soil is being almost immediately taken care of. Refugees should not be a primary concern for our country and until our government officials realize that, then we will continue to struggle with national debt and problems funding other parts of our country.
