With 1 in 5 (19%) Australians possessing at least one tattoo, why is having ink in the workforce still such a controversial topic? Whether it be a cute little butterfly on your hand, your mother's name, or even a full arm sleeve, should your personal expressions really deem your employment status? Numerous employers are claiming that visible tattoos are unprofessional and off-putting to clientele, and admit that they would not hire someone with visible body art. Surely such discrimination would not be tolerated this day in age, yet it continues to happen every day. Being declined a job for expressing yourself through your skin is prejudice and should not be accepted by today's society. For certain professions such as a primary school teacher, it is acceptable however, to ask a tattoo, such as a skull or other gory inappropriate images to be covered, so as to not scare the children. Whether it be a skull tattoo, or a beautifully detailed dove sleeve however, neither should determine, nor influence whether or not an individual is eligible for a job position. Individuals should be judged on the merits of their work, not the art in which the choose to adorn their bodies. If someone is able to express themselves - or more importantly be themselves, they will be able to do their best work and be a greater asset to their company. Discrimination laws are in place protecting individuals from being turned down for a job based on their skin colour, gender, disabilities, religion, and various other reasons, so why do they not extend to tattoos? Society as a whole has come to the realisation that there is no difference between someone with dark skin and someone with white skin, so the fact that people still view individuals with tattoos as lesser than those without is absolutely absurd.
