Why Dance is a Sport
If you’re a dancer, you’re used to people telling you that dance is not considered a sport, but an art. Well I think it’s both because of many reasons. Dance is a sport because of its definition, strength, agility and coordination.
Most people say it’s not a sport because there is not some type of ball involved. The definition of the word “sport” is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. If you’re on a competitive dance team, you compete against other teams for overall places. Dance fits the definition of a sport so why don’t we consider it as one? Even though people might say that a dancer’s practice isn’t very hard, they are very wrong. Dancers go home with bruises, blisters, scratches, and sore muscles every day that they have practice. A dancer can break a bone as easily as an athlete in any other sport by landing on your foot the wrong way after a jump or leap or by losing your balance during a turn. Dancing also requires more stretching than any other sport. If a dancer doesn’t stretch correctly they can tear, sprain, or pull almost any muscle in their body.

People think that being able to dance is not hard and that anyone can do it, but this is not at all true. Yes, anyone can dance if they want, but that does not mean that they are good at it. The same applies for football, basketball, or any other sport you prefer. A dancer possesses the ability of athletic skill, dedication, flexibility, strength, endurance, and the ability to act. Acting is a big part of dancing because a dancer has to portray a certain character in a dance. Dance contains many skills that are very hard to achieve, while any other sport only has a few skills needed.
Who takes part in sports? Athletes. An athlete is a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength; a participant in a sport, exercise, or game requiring physical skill.
