Wrestling is one of the oldest sports on the earth today. Dating all the way back to 708 B.C.; although wrestling was founded by the Greeks it has become popular in many cultures today. However, as deep as wrestling is in history, the International Olympic Committee made a decision to drop wrestling from the list of sports to be announced in the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Seven months later they withdrew their decision to drop it, but the initial decision got many thinking. With wrestling having such an impact in world history, would it in any way be justified to pull it from the Olympics, an event full of influential sports? The popularity of wrestling is definitely lacking and because of this lack athletes are not making the amount they should be, are being threatened to be pulled from the olympics, and are not recognized nearly as much as other athletes. People are becoming more simple minded, and because of this high intensity sports, such as wrestling, are becoming harder for people to understand, so rather than dig to try and understand they shrug it off and make comments like, ‘It’s just sweaty men in spandex rolling around’. Yes, maybe, but these ‘sweaty men’ are exerting more energy in a small six minute window then any football or soccer player is in their entire 60 or 90 minute game. A list on totalsportek.com ranks wrestling as the second most difficult sport in the world, falling only behind boxing. Total Sportek says, “Wrestling is pretty much like MMA, only harder. Unlike some of the other individual/team sports where intervals play a part for the athlete to get some rest/energy but Wrestling/MMA are non-stop one of one actions as soon as fighters enter the ring, they need strength/power, top speed reflexes, greater endurance/stamina and overall durability.
Wrestling is hard and it deserves it’s spot in the olympics. It’s not a sport one can run a play and stop for three seconds to rest. If one rests in wrestling he or she loses. Wrestlers don’t get subs or water breaks, it’s all their strength for six minutes, may not seem like much, but that’s about the average time someone runs a mile, give or take.
