Yes Hawaii can be expense, and when you come to Hawaii to live, you should already have a job offer or another income, Pension, SSI, IRA, 401K, Trust Fund, whatever. To tell people, not to come to live there, will push a non conformist to jump on the next plane.
I live in California and no matter how exclusive a beach or mountain area is, from San Diego all the way north to Crescent City, it will attract, what you may call the unemployed, transients and low-lifers. They have one thing in common with the rest of the population and that is, they love the beaches and mountains too and there is nothing anybody can do to keep them away.

Being married to a Hawaiian woman for 31 years has taught me the pecking order in Hawaii and where I'm at on that list. Again this is only my Haole opinion.
1. Pure Hawaiians
2. Hawaiian decent mixed with other races, born in Hawaii (Hapa's)
3. All other Non Haoles Non Hawaiian decent, mixed Asian races, know as (Locals), born in Hawaii
4. Mixed Hawaiian's married to Haoles and both born in the Mainland. (Me and My wife)
5. All Tourists
If you are white and born in Hawaii, I know you love to call yourself (LOCAL) but the truth is among Hawaiians and Non Haole Locals which are 90% of the population, you will never be anything more than a Haole taking up space in Hawaii.
My advantages in Hawaii is my marriage to a woman of Hawaiian descent, knowledge and respect of the Hawaiian culture, and contributing to the Hawaiian economy, my (Fat Wallet). Other than that I'm just another Haole taking up space in Hawaii.
To some it all up, the face of Hawaiians and Hawaii has been changing for decades and housing has it ups and downs due to population growth and at times foreign investment. There is nothing you can to do to keep the rift raft out of Hawaii. Focus on your career and finances, enjoy what Hawaii has to offer you as
