Director, writer, and producer, Gabriella Cowperthwaite, in her documentary, Blackfish, describes the shameless hunting and treatment of killer whales. Cowperthwaite’s purpose is to persuade us into opening our eyes to the reality of what we are doing to killer whales by confining them in captivity. She invents an emotionally wrenching tone in order to transmit to the adult viewers that living in captivity may not be acceptable life for the whales. The film effectively showed that the whales should not be kept in captivity by giving the audience examples of their signs of aggression and displays of emotion. Cowperthwaite begins her documentary by showing how killer whales can become barbaric when held captive.
Marine parks in the country like SeaWorld, have orcas in tanks that they live in captivity. They use most of the killer whales for their performances in the pool. We all know that orcas are social, and intelligent creatures, that live in the oceans of the earth. We also know that many scientist are trying to study these animals in captivity where they are in tankes. I think Killer Whales should not be in captivity because, of the injures they can get in their tanks, how they get stressed out and they are better in the wild.
In the book Dawn, written by Elie Wiesel, Elisha has many internal conflicts which he has to deal with before and after the killing of John Dawson. The value of innocent human life is questioned in this book and whether or not Elisha is ready to take away such a precious gift. Elisha is reluctant to kill a human being for the sole reason he is British and an enemy to Elisha and his group’s cause. Even though Elisha and his group agree that the British are the cause of the suffering of the Jews in Palestine, Elisha is reluctant to execute a person who isn’t proven to be guilty of a crime nor innocent; he is a complete stranger. The novel’s title gives the reader a symbolic clue as to what effect the execution will have on Elisha.
In 2013, the documentary called Blackfish was released, a story about a killer whale that over the years at SeaWorld killed several people. It highlighted some of the major problems with animals in captivity. SeaWorld, known for having several different animal attractions; Dolphin Cove, Dolphin Nursery, Orca Underwater Viewing, Shark Encounter, Wild Arctic (Habitat) and many more. The organization first started with the intention of learning more about animals in order to educate the public about different behaviors of each animal. Trainers at Seaworld are offered the opportunity to get hands-on training with animals and are eventually are allowed to entertain the public with the skills they have acquired.
I believe that SeaWorld should close down because, animals are kept in captivity which is harmful to the orcas. True SeaWorld is a wonderful place to visit, it’s a great place to go and get entertained, but what you might not know is that it is hurting the animals. Keeping the orcas in tanks and cages is very dangerous because when they are let out, their could be very dangerous and can be very grumpy and aggressive. The truth is that the orcas are taken from the pod from the wild and are brought to the SeaWorld. Therefore, when they arrive at SeaWorld, they are expected to make friends with other orcas and become a pod.
Andre Cole Ricardo Acosta G. English 101 September 22, 2015 Do Killer Whales Actually Belong in Captivity? Ever since wild animals such as Killer Whales have been captured and kept in theme parks and zoos as amusement, there have been issues on whether they should or shouldn’t be kept in captivity. Killer Whales, otherwise commonly referred to as Orcas, have regularly been taken away from the sea at a very young age so they can be trained, raised and kept in theme parks for exhibition. Although theme parks no longer capture whales from the wild, they are still bred in captivity for public display at marine parks such as Sea World (Gorman).
The target audience of this documentary is the general public that includes a big emphasis on the customers of SeaWorld. The filmmakers are trying to inform the public of the inhumane treatment and the conditions that the orcas face while at amusements parks such as SeaWorld. As described in the film, orcas are seen as intellectual animals that are aware of their surroundings. Because of their intellect, orcas don’t belong in a place SeaWorld and should be released.
In 2013, a documentary called Blackfish was released to the public. This film was produced, written, and directed by a lady named Gabriela Cowperthwaite, as a way to show the world how poorly whales are treated and why they do not belong in captivity. Blackfish also shows how little people really know about the beautiful and highly intelligent orca whale itself. Her film was seen by many, and touched the hearts of a lot people, taking the debate of the topic to a higher level. The movie hits on a lot of main issues about captivity, told by reliable people, along with proven statistics to go along with them.
Furthermore, this can be the cause of all the incidence including to what happened to Dawn Brancheau who was completely mutilated by a whale. Despite the interview with a former trainer, from a document which was published after the release of Blackfish by SeaWorld to object
Do you remember that day that you and your family took a trip to that one park? That one that you got to see many different types of sea animals, dolphins putting on shows, and getting to even interact with the sea animals in a great learning experience. That park is SeaWorld. When you were there, you might have not noticed the stuff that was happening behind the scenes. Lately, the animals have been very sad and not living healthy lives.
The only whales that should be kept in captivity are injured whales; whales that would never make it on their own. There are some rare instances when they need humans to survive. “Springer was an immature and sickly killer whale who lost her pod in 2002 and began to associate with humans in Puget Sound near Vancouver” (“What to do about a killer whale”). Springer was “nursed back to health and returned to the wild quickly” (“What to do about a killer whale”). If a whale needs help, then humans should do everything they can to get them healthy again and nothing more.
Since then, SeaWorld no longer takes orcas from the sea, because they have enough whales at SeaWorld to birth their own. This just adds to the fact that SeaWorld is

Franz Schubert is a 31-year old Austrian composer who has been recently diagnosed with typhoid fever and a stage of syphilis. Schubert first began the battle with his illness when he started to suffer from headaches and skin rashes. A while later, he began losing his hair in small patches. These symptoms are very similar to symptoms for mercury poisoning, which is a common treatment for syphilis. It is possible that while Schubert was being treated for syphilis, he acquired mercury poisoning.
Being held captive leads animals to have abnormal behaviors that unfortunately can lead to the deaths of people. Although zoos and sea-parks claim they are all about educating the public and conservation we know its
